Constructions

Linda Burris Webster

This project is an exploration. It is a meander through a community, one based in northern Tanzania in an area where few outsiders venture. The images are of shops, churches and businesses are inspired by the work of Walker Evans. They provide glimpses, both individually and collectively, into a distant community. And yet, what realities can these photographs truly convey? What layers of interpretation exist within a single image? Familiar and foreign are juxtaposed within each image, pointing to both seen and unseen realities.
The viewer is invited to construct their own interpretation of this community, based on these images, just as the photographer, an outsider, constructed theirs. But while constructing their perceptions, the viewer is also invited to consider what influences their reading of the images and how the dynamic between photographer, viewer and image operates within that reading.
