Lockdown Neighbourhood

Morten Watkins

On March 23rd 2020 the UK government declared a national lockdown in an effort to slow the spread of Covid-19. With travel restrictions in place, daily outings limited to one hour for exercise and grocery shopping limited to essential items only, the population found themselves in uncharted territory.

Over the course of a few weeks in April, I spoke to some of my neighbours to get a sense of how they were coping. I wanted to know what they had been doing to keep themselves safe, entertained and well stocked with essentials during these extraordinary times.

Amongst the people I spoke to were front line workers adjusting to a life wearing full PPE, to teenagers preparing for a summer indoors, and families finding new ways of communicating with each other over long distance.

Within their stories I encountered worry and concern for the wellbeing of others, as well as great ingenuity and an overwhelmingly positive attitude to an otherwise impossible situation which, at the time, still had no end in sight.
