Amelia Shepherd

As the global pandemic swept across the world; countries, cities, towns, families & individuals were forced rapidly to adapt. Here in Spain we endured the most severe lockdown measures in Europe. Children, the elderly & vulnerable couldn’t leave their homes for 6 weeks. No-one was outside unless buying food or medicines. The streets were policed & empty.

Isolated, locked down, many people alone.

Through a time of severe disconnect I was fortunate enough to make an unexpected re-connection. I joined Zoom kickboxing classes which I’d practised for years formerly in the UK. It became a lifeline. The digital world enabled escape from isolation. My fears, anger, frustrations had an outlet. Metaphorically I was somehow fighting the disease, just about staying afloat. Kickboxing enabled me to offset the intensity of suddenly being confined to the house with my two young children.

Rapidly Zoom became part of a global ‘new normal’. Synonymously and fundamentally it symbolised Covid-19. Its screen became archetypal, speaking for now.

Artist biography

In an age of vacuous selfies I use self portraiture to examine my identity, relationship to the world & strive to create powerful images which transcend the frame & speak to many. I began self portraiture whilst looking at identity & stereotypes in the world of female fighters in photo-series' & multi-media installations. During pregnancy I continued self documenting exhibiting raw unseen elements of carrying new life in my womb. Continuing, I visualised my motherhood journey & entrapment within the domestic through sculptural playful arresting self portraits, altering & elevating everyday objects/situations creating relatable 'Mother' icons.
